There are so many pressures that come with showing in a Saddleseat class. It seems as though the judge is always watching at the wrong time. One little mess up can easily cost you an entire class. It is easy to give up quickly and throw the class away. However, for the optimistic riders out there, there are plenty of ways to win back a class.
1.) Raise your chin - raise your ribbon
Judges are more likely to tie horse and rider teams that work well together. It is up to the rider to make everything look easy and fluid. By simply lifting your chin and sitting straighter, you will exude a far more confident appearance. Confidence is key, and judges love to see riders who can handle their horses.
2.)"Ride 'em like you stole 'em"
Every single judge is completely different from the next. However, it is extremely common for the "high energy" horses to place above the more reserved moving ones. Judges often like to see competitiveness among riders. The harder you ride, the more you stand out. Ride boldly and confidently, but make sure you are ready to ride what you ask for.
3.) Smile through the pain
Sometimes, classes feel like they will never end. The judge is struggling to make a final decision and always needs to see that extra round. For a gaited class, that "TROT!" before a line-up can feel like a death sentence. Just remember, your horse is just as tired as you are. You have to be strong for the both of you! Put on your best smile and push through. Judges love saddlebreds with stamina.
4.) Work with the crowd
The audience will always cheer for their favorite. Get the crowd's attention and roll with it! The judge can hear the cheers as much as you can. When the crowd roars, be bold! Make the move and work with your rail. Don't be a bump on log and ride in a line. Get creative with your placing. Don't be afraid to stray from the rail and mix it up. The crowd loves a horse that is on the move.
5.) Have fun!
The most important part of showing is having fun. If you can't enjoy the competition, saddleseat may not be for you. Judges will always notice the horse and rider teams that are enjoying themselves. Let your happiness speak for itself and enjoy the ride!
